Yay for Small Presses!

Small Presses are run by some of the most passionate, intelligent, and just plain fun to talk to people in books. Going to the Small Publishers Fair in London is a highlight of my year, and absolutely should not be missed by anyone who happens to be in the city at the end of October. It’s the place to pick up some of the most lovingly produced books anywhere in the world, and a great opportunity to chat with the fascinating people that make them.

At the fair this year were some of my favorites, including Les Fugitives, Lolli Editions and Guillemot Press. I also picked up some beauties from Longbarrow Press - the fascinating longform poem The European Eel by Steve Ely and Truth, Justice and the Companionship of Owls – which sells itself on the strength of its title alone.

If you can't make it to the fair in person though, consider subscribing to a small press. Subscriptions are a great way to stock your mailbox with gorgeous, interesting books throughout the year and to support the arts while you're at it. I've loved my subscriptions to Dead Ink Books and And Other Stories, but I've missed getting Les Fugitives books, as they stopped shipping to Europe after Brexit. On that note, I'm happy to announce that I'll now be shipping their award-winning work to anywhere in Europe. This includes Eastbound by Maylis de Kerangal, just named one of the New York Times' Ten Best Books of 2023!  Email hello@needleandhay.com for details or to order.

We’re living in the golden age of small presses and I’m really looking forward to highlighting their innovative and excellent work at Needle & Hay.
